Playground Construction Colorado: A 3-Step Windsor School Project Showcase

Playground Construction Colorado: A 3-Step Windsor School Project Showcase

Windsor, Colorado – July 2026 – When it comes to high-quality playground construction Colorado communities can trust, the secret lies entirely in the preparation and the equipment. There is a massive difference between a playground that wears out after a couple of seasons and one that stands the test of time, weather, and thousands of energetic school children.

At Ground Solutions, we recently put our specialized fleet to work at a brand-new school playground right here in Windsor, Colorado.

For school districts, municipalities, and general contractors, summer is the ultimate crunch time to get these recreational spaces built before the new school year begins. If you have ever wondered what it takes to transform a bare dirt lot into a safe, durable, and vibrant play area, here is a behind-the-scenes look at our exact 3-step process on this Windsor project.

Step 1: The Initial Playground Installation

Every great recreational space starts with structural integrity. As you can see in the in-progress project image, Step 1 is all about the physical playground install.

During this initial phase, the heavy structural elements are anchored firmly into the ground. For this Windsor school, the playground installation featured a robust, modern system complete with bright yellow support posts, multiple climbing sections, safety shades, and deep blue slides.

Before any safety surfacing or ground layers can be applied, the layout must be perfectly mapped out. The posts must be concreted into place, and the main play structures must be fully assembled. However, once the equipment is standing, it leaves a major logistical hurdle: how do you get tons of heavy base material inside the complex web of posts and under the slides without damaging the brand-new equipment or the surrounding concrete walkways?

Step 2: Slinger Trucks Laying the Road Base

This is where traditional methods fail, and Ground Solutions shines. Once the equipment is installed, Step 2 requires laying down a perfectly level, compacted road base. This sub-layer is critical for proper drainage and providing a stable foundation for the final safety surface.

If a contractor uses traditional skid steers or track loaders to haul road base into a tight playground grid, they risk:

  • Denting or scratching the newly installed yellow posts.
  • Cracking the freshly poured concrete sidewalks surrounding the play area.
  • Tearing up the surrounding topsoil and creating a massive muddy mess.

To completely bypass these risks, we brought in our advanced Conveyor Slinger Truck.

Instead of driving heavy machinery into the delicate play zone, our slinger truck parked comfortably on the exterior pavement. The operator then utilized the precision remote-controlled conveyor arm to literally “shoot” and place the aggregate road base exactly where it needed to go. The slinger allows us to throw material over fences, around tight corners, and directly beneath low-clearance slides with absolute precision. This kept the Windsor project moving fast, clean, and completely damage-free.

Step 3: The Finished Product with Rubber Surfacing

With the structural playground install complete and the road base perfectly laid and compacted by our slinger, it is time for the grand finale. Step 3 focuses on delivering the finished product with rubber surfacing.

While engineered wood fiber is a popular choice for many playgrounds, a premium poured-in-place or bonded rubber safety surface offers unmatched longevity, accessibility, and safety.

Applying the rubber layer provides several distinct advantages for the school:

  • Maximum Impact Absorption: It meets strict ASTM safety criteria to protect children from falls.
  • ADA Accessibility: Unlike loose wood chips or gravel, a finished rubber surface is perfectly smooth, allowing wheelchairs and strollers to navigate the playground effortlessly.
  • Low Maintenance: It won’t blow away in intense Colorado winds, it doesn’t require constant raking, and it keeps weeds from popping up through the road base.

The result is a beautiful, seamless, and highly durable play area that is fully prepared to handle recess duty for years to come.
